FAQs: applying to the TRP

What is translational research?

Translational research is science-based problem solving.

A field of investigation focussing on understanding the practices and principles underlying the processes of turning knowledge, observations and discoveries into interventions that improve the health of individuals and the public.

Can international students apply to the TRP?

Yes, the Master of Health Science in Translational Research Program welcomes both domestic and international applicants.

Application deadlines differ – please check the application deadline relevant to you

What documents are required to apply?

Submit an application on the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) portal with the following documentation:

  • Letter of intent (500 words)
  • CV/Resume
  • Unofficial transcripts including grading scale
  • Three (3) reference letters

If you are an international applicant, you are required to submit the same documentation but you need to review the information regarding international degree equivalences, certified translation of transcript, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and student study permit requirements listed on our website.

Do all application documents need to be submitted by the deadline?

Yes, the application fee must be paid, and all application documents must be submitted by the application deadline in order to be reviewed. This includes all three reference letters from referees.

When will I be notified of admission decisions?

The Translational Research Program uses a rolling admissions model. We review applications as they are submitted – only when they have been submitted in full, including all supporting documents and the SGS application fee has been paid.

We conduct interviews and make offers on a rolling basis.

We encourage you to apply early as there only 25-35 places per year.

You will receive admissions decisions through the School of Graduate Studies portal.

Can I study part time in the TRP?

No, the Master of Health Science in Translational Research Program is only offered as a full-time program.

While structured full-time, it is designed as a flexible two-year program with only two days in-person per week.

Many of our students balance work and other studies while completing the TRP - read more about balancing career and education in our program.

You do need to dedicate time to the TRP and be able to balance your workload.

Can I start the program in a winter or spring term?

No, you must start the program in September.

Do I need to secure a supervisor to apply to TRP?

No, the first year of the Translational Research program is course based, and the second year is based on a capstone research project. You do not need a supervisor at the start of the program.

We will allocate you a faculty supervisor for your Capstone research project and you will be responsible for developing your own capstone research advisory committee, comprised of field experts, in the second year of the program.

Is this program eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)?

Yes, the Translational Research Program is eligible for OSAP.

What career paths do graduates typically pursue?

You will gain transferable skills in problem solving, leadership, and innovation suitable for startups and healthcare transformational roles.
