- Balance your career and education with the TRP
- For employers: why the TRP
For employers: why your employee should join the TRP
If you're thinking about why you should give your employee the time, and potentially funding, to complete the Translational Research Program, we understand it can be a big commitment.
- Two years is a long time when there are 'mini-MBAs' and other options out there.
- An in-person program means your employee needs to commit to being in Toronto and to ring-fence a certain amount of time and will be less available for you.
We have some reasons for you to consider.
1. Professional development from the #1 University in Canada
The University of Toronto is the leading research and education institution in Canada. You are guaranteed the quality of teaching and research involved in the program will be high. Your employee will have access to world-leading experts who provide exposure to global networks.
Investing (whether that be in time or funding) in your employee's professional development makes employees more productive, happier and more likely to benefit your organisation.
2. Tangible, practical skills that can be applied during the program (you don't have to wait until completion)
We produce graduates who are confident and creative problem solvers, able to be adaptable and work with ambiguity. The skills and knowledge they will gain in the program are practical, flexible and instantly applicable - you do not have to wait two years to see these new-found skills used in the workplace.
In the TRP, our students are exposed to a vast network of people (as well as being taught how to interact with them). If you are a hospital - can you imagine the benefits of your clinician-scientists being able to access and comfortably engage with venture capitalists or patient advocacy groups? If you are a biotech or pharma company, can you see the benefits of your employees engaging with clinicians and patients?
3. Your institution will benefit from experts and guided research
Your employee will be working and collaborating with a large number of people, including world-leading experts. They will complete a Capstone research project in their second year that ideally should be a workplace-based project they can implement and continue beyond their time in the TRP.
This means you, as an employer, are accessing expert guidance to complete a project in workplace, while your employee is gaining professional development skills. It's a win win!
4. Working and learning - more flexible than you think
This is a two-year program where most of our students work alongside their studies.
They will need time to attend classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays in their first year and have some time and space to devote to their studies. The second year is devoted to their Capstone research project. This involves attending a monthly class with some meetings and electives, but has much less in-class time than first year.
We understand our students have other commitments including work and family and support them to navigate that.
5. Return on investment - developing your own innovators
Innovation can be expensive, time-consuming and difficult. If you invest in your employees to develop an innovator-mindset, they can find efficiencies in the workplace and improve patient care without you having to engage costly contractors or external companies.
Any graduate from the TRP is a valuable resource who can think differently in your organisation and have the skills and knowledge to make innovation work for you.
