Research Interests: Kidney development and maldevelopment in rodents and human. Pacemaker cells in the urinary tract; urinary tract obstruction.
Norman is recipient of the Scientific Director, Nutrition, Metabolism, and Diabetes at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair for Developmental Nephrology. He investigates molecular mechanisms that control kidney development. His lab has established several genetic mouse models of human kidney-urinary tract malformation and has published over a 110 peer-reviewed original manuscripts and book chapters. He is now translating what he discovered in mouse models to patients using cell and tissue regeneration. Norman is a purposeful mentor. He is deeply engaged in career development programs for clinician-scientists. He founded and led the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program from 2001-2012 and was the former Associate Dean of Physician Scientist Training at the Faculty of Medicine. At the TRP, he is a member of the Advisory Board and Toronto Translational Hub Advisor.
