Patient engagement and communications: Lunch & Learn with the TRP

Type
Lunch & Learn

Join the Translational Research Program (TRP) at the University of Toronto for our Lunch & Learn with TRP: Bite-Sized Insights for Better Care - a series of fast-paced, interactive lunch-hour sessions designed to give clinicians and healthcare workers practical tools to lead change in their organizations and improve patient care.

In just 60 minutes, you’ll gain actionable insights, ask questions, and leave with new strategies you can use the same day.

This session will cover communicating with, and engaging, patients in research.

Engaging patients in research early, often results in better outcomes, especially if there is a direct clinical impact. But how do you engage them effectively? Join us for this interactive session on patient engagement and communication strategies that can aid your research, help develop improvement strategies, and improve patient outcomes.

Our expert speaker will share a 20-minute talk followed by Q&A and discussion. You’ll leave with practical tools to engage patients meaningfully in your work.

The strategies and practice of patient engagement: insights from a patient partner

Speaker: Maxime Lê, Patient partner with Ontario Health, The Ottawa Hospital and Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and founder of Lê & Co. Health Communication Santé

The concept of patient engagement has slowly become embedded in our healthcare systems over the past decade. Nowadays, patient engagement has become an expectation of patients and their caregivers, and some are increasingly calling for more meaningful opportunities for engagement... but what does that look like in practice?

During this session, join Maxime Lê to:

  • Explore the role of patient partners throughout the healthcare and health research systems
  • Understand the conditions which facilitate a successful patient engagement project
  • Learn simple communication strategies that are proven to build trust and fosters a collaborative environment

Based on his lived and living experience of chronic and acute illnesses and invisible disability, combined with professional and academic expertise in health communication, Maxime has been sharing his experience of surgery and health research since 2017 in numerous forums. His insights and advice have led to clinical policy changes, the maturation of patient engagement programs, improvements in patient safety and care quality, and more tailored research outcomes.
