Brief Bio:

Prof. Hegele received his MD degree from the University of Toronto, where he also completed his internship and residency training in Anatomical Pathology. Prof. Hegele then earned his PhD in Experimental Pathology from the University of British Columbia.

Certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Pathology, Prof. Hegele served as Department Head in the University of British Columbia’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from 2005 to 2008.

In January 2009, Prof. Hegele was appointed Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. He held this position until he was appointed Vice Dean, Research and Innovation in January 2016. He became Chief of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children in February 2011 and is serving his second term in that role.
